iPad i stället för papper

Nya studenter vid Stanford University School of Medicine kommer att få nya iPads vid terminsstart i stället för kurskompendier och annat tryckt material (se artikeln i SF Gate, New Stanford medical students to receive iPads). Universitetet har räknat ut att kostnaderna för dessa iPads är bara lite mer än de hade lagt ut på tryckning och kopiering av det gamla kursmaterialet som nu finns endast på nätet.

Enligt Dr Charles Prober vid universitetet:

- I think the iPad will also be useful for these future doctors to explain to patients what medical conditions or surgeries look like, They can pull out the iPad in the exam room and enhance their explanations with diagrams or pictures. And they'll always be able to have their medical school notes with them, even after they graduate. It's impossible to do that with a textbook.
