Stanfords öppna kurs lockar 58 000 studenter

Jag skrev för ett par veckor sedan om en ny öppen kurs, Artificial Intelligence, som Stanford University erbjuder denna termin (se tidigare artikel). Kursen är öppen för alla och kostnadsfri, fast studenter som läser gratis får inga akademiska poäng.

Enligt en artikel i New York Times, Virtual and artificial but 58,000 want course, har nu över 58 000 studenter från 175 länder nu sökt kursen tillsammans med de som är registrerade Stanford studenter. Hur kommer lärarna att ta hand om så många? Svaret är att studenterna läser tillsammans i virtuella grupper och arbetar genom materialet själva. Men inspelade lektioner och diskussioner på nätet betyder att lärarna är ändå synliga.

- How will the artificial intelligence instructors grade 58,000 students? The scientists said they would make extensive use of technology. “We have a system running on the Amazon cloud, so we think it will hold up,” Dr. Norvig said.
In place of office hours, they will use the Google moderator service, software that will allow students to vote on the best questions for the professors to respond to in an online chat and possibly video format. They are considering ways to personalize the exams to minimize cheating.
