The semantic web and the social media provide a platform for storing structured digital information and sharing data between interested parties across the Internet. From a researcher's point of view, this development presents opportunities such as a wealth of information that can be explored to gain knowledge, collaborative tools for supporting international research projects, and new venues for disseminating or discussing the state-of-the-art. The new platform also brings challenges in the form of ethical issues, the need for adaptation of laws and regulations, and the problem of how to verify the validity of linked open data.
